H2O Q is an engaging Environmental Education unit which aligns with MI Science Standards as a place based learning opportunity for middle and high school students to focus on surface water quality testing and data gathering. The training will focus on the use of H2O Q materials and collected data in place-based classroom activities, including the use of a data mapping platform. Each participant will receive the H20 Q backpack which includes water quality testing technology and supplies, access to the middle school curriculum-based lessons (which can be adapted for HS), and support to implement the unit. Through participating in this training, teachers will receive on-going support from a Chippewa Nature Center naturalist in addition to the curriculum, content, and materials provided. All participating classrooms will be invited to a community showcase event at Chippewa Nature Center in Spring 2021 to share their stewardship projects and data. This program is developed and presented in partnership with the College of Science and Engineering at Central Michigan University and the American Chemical Society Midland Chapter and is a project of Dr. Dale LeCaptain, funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency. This free training will take place at Chippewa Nature Center, 400 S. Badour Road, Midland, MI 48640. Please dress for the weather and bring water shoes and a change of clothes as we will be getting in to the water. Lunch will be included and a $75 stipend is available to cover substitute teacher costs. Additional details about the program can be found here: se.cmich.edu/H2OQ
