Join Interpretive Naturalist Jeanne Henderson for a day hike to a unique ecosystem close to home – a fen bordering Pintail Pond at Rifle River Recreation Area in Lupton! Fens are a sedge and rush wetland on top of peat with calcium and magnesium rich groundwater flowing underneath. The area is rich with special plants adapted to live in these conditions. We’ll look for sphagnum moss, pitcher plants, sundew, cranberry, and bog rosemary! Trees like black spruce, tamarack, and white cedar trees are interspersed through the area too. After a picnic lunch, we’ll continue our hike with another woodland trail in the park. Be prepared to walk 3-4 miles and bring your own lunch and snacks. Binoculars, cameras and plant field guides are recommended; we will have some loaners available.
