Here’s your chance to be involved in a Monarch Butterfly tagging! The Monarch Butterfly is the only true migratory butterfly. Each year from August to November, they journey from the northern U.S. and southern Canada to their winter roosts in south-central Mexico; a monarch tagged at CNC in 2008 was recovered in Mexico! With the cooperation of the monarchs and the weather, we will net the butterflies, give them a checkup, apply a tiny tag help researchers understand the amazing migration of this butterfly, then send them on their way. If we find a tag on a butterfly, we’ll report it to the University of Kansas, where they track the Monarch migration and compile the data. Join Denny Brooks at the Lanigan Pavilion at the Homestead Road turnaround. Butterfly nets will be available for this drop-in program.
